Carole Lombard (1906–1935)
Biography
A significant stage and film actress, Carole Lombard was born in Star, Wyoming, the daughter of a newspaper editor and a homemaker. She was named after her paternal grandmother, who may have had Native American ancestry. In 1918, the family moved to California. Her first stage appearance was in 1921 at age 16, in Camille by Henrik Ibsen. Lombard acted in about 25 plays before she made her first film, “The Fighting Cook,” in 1925. She then started a string of career highs, including a lead role in “Three Comrades” (1925) and the second film version of Ibsen’s “Lady of the Sea.”
From the early 1930s on, however, Lombard’s film career was steady but unspectacular. In 1933, she married director William A. Wellman. The marriage produced a son, William, in 1934. The marriage ended after only nine months. Lombard filed for bankruptcy, claiming that her husband had left her destitute. At the time of her death, she was under court order to pay alimony to her ex-husband, and owed him $125,000 in back child support.
Lombard died of a heart attack in Los Angeles. Her last film was “Hollywood Party” in 1934.

“Watching My Mother-in-Law Grow Old” is a novel by American author and screenwriter Nancy A. Jones. It was published in 2011 by Viking Press. The book became a New York Times bestseller and has been translated into eight languages.
The book is set in Ohio, where Diana Babb, a young widow, goes to live with her mother and her mother’s unmarried sister after the death of her husband. There, Diana encounters the town’s eccentric, middle-aged doctor, Walter Bartlett. After trying to seduce him for a week, Diana goes home to find her young son Henry taken ill. Her mother suspects the doctor is to blame. Diana is able to prove her suspicions.
