Overview
AutoCAD is an integrated 2D and 3D CAD software application, which incorporates a variety of drafting tools, such as freehand drawing, traditional drafting, three-dimensional modeling, and technical plotting. Like many other computer-aided drafting (CAD) software applications, AutoCAD is used to create 2D drafting drawings, as well as 3D models, such as technical drawings and design plans.
AutoCAD, like its competitor CAD software packages, provides a variety of technical drafting tools and an integrated graphics engine that produces true vector and raster graphics. However, unlike most other CAD programs, AutoCAD uses a full 2D drawing model and a series of references called entities to draw the models. Using this approach, AutoCAD can be used as a complete drafting program or it can be used to create a technical drawing. The fundamental difference between a technical drawing and a drafting drawing is that a technical drawing is used to communicate plans and designs, while a drafting drawing is used to communicate the project design.
A technical drawing should consist of all the information that is necessary to reproduce the plans or designs, while a drafting drawing usually does not.

History
The first version of AutoCAD was released in March 1990. Version 1.0 was code named "Freeware" and was free to use.
In July 1993, following its acquisition by Autodesk, the first version of AutoCAD Professional was released. It contained AutoCAD graphics capabilities, was sold for $1495, and allowed users to create drawings with parametric shapes, which were not included in the original AutoCAD. 
In October 1996, Autodesk released AutoCAD Map 3D, a map-oriented version of AutoCAD. In June 2003, Autodesk released AutoCAD LT 2.0, a free product, with basic functionality, less documentation and an interface aimed at small businesses. On September 20, 2003, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2002 for Microsoft Windows.
On April 14, 2011, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2012, which is a totally redesigned version of AutoCAD. This new version has an interface similar to that of Microsoft's new operating system Windows 8, and can be used with either Windows XP or Windows 7, but not Vista. With AutoCAD 2012, it is now possible to use a two-button click on the cross, similar to those used on a smartphone.
AutoCAD Map 3D 2012 is a component of AutoCAD 2012, which was released on April 14, 2011. This application is a CAD extension which allows users to view their 3D models and create 2D maps. This application also included a DWG Viewer which allows users to import and modify DWG files with Autodesk 3D Viewer software.
AutoCAD LT 2013, the second Free-to-use version of AutoCAD, was released on October 24, 2012.
