The 2015-16 FIBA Under-20 World Cup USA team continued its streak of postseason success on Thursday night, defeating the Dominican Republic 77-64 in the gold medal game at Madison Square Garden.
It was the first title for the U.S. team in the 13-year history of the event. The Americans had previously won the championship in 2004 (Uruguay) and 2007 (Spain).
The U.S. title marks the third in four years for the team, which takes the gold medals from Serbia in 2014 and Australia in 2015.
For the first time in the event’s history, the U.S. roster contains all five starters from last year’s U20 Final Four.
Also for the first time in FIBA U20 history, the game is broadcast live on ESPN and ESPN3. The tournament features some of the top teams in the world and the top players in the world. Ten players on Thursday’s roster are also on the 2016 McDonald’s and Nike Hoop Summit NBA Draft prospects list.
