History
On March 12, 1983, Autodesk announced AutoCAD for the Apple II series of computers. The Apple II version of AutoCAD, released on April 15, 1984, used a "mouse" interface, similar to those on mice. The first version of AutoCAD, 0.1, was released in May 1984 for the Apple II and the Atari 8-bit family of computers. The 8-bit version of AutoCAD continued to use the mouse for drawing and running commands. In early 1985, versions of AutoCAD for the C-64 and VIC-20 computers were released. AutoCAD did not run on the Z-80-based Amiga.
In 1986, AutoCAD was made available on Hewlett-Packard desktop and portable computers, the Apple Macintosh, and the Commodore Amiga. In 1987, Autodesk released the first version of AutoCAD for the IBM PC. AutoCAD for the IBM PC used the Graphical Device Interface (GDI), a simple graphical interface similar to those used in Windows and DOS, but featuring a small character-based interface.
In 1988, the first version of AutoCAD for the MS-DOS operating system was released. AutoCAD for DOS used the Extended Graphics File Format (Exif) as a graphics file format. AutoCAD for DOS ran under MS-DOS and DR DOS. In 1989, AutoCAD 1.0 for Microsoft Windows was released. AutoCAD for Windows used a more complete graphical interface, similar to that of the Macintosh program.
In the late 1980s, the Lotus 1-2-3 computer product (1989) introduced the graphical user interface (GUI), an interface that used windows, icons, pull-down menus, and the mouse to permit the user to interact with computers. In 1991, AutoCAD 2.0 for the Macintosh was released. The Macintosh version of AutoCAD used a three-dimensional (3-D) perspective "perspective view" style similar to those found in most video games and found in certain versions of 3-D Computer Graphics. AutoCAD for Macintosh also allowed the use of the mouse, and used "layers" to add objects to drawing sheets.
