History
AutoCAD is a product of Autodesk, a Fortune 500 company specializing in software for the design and creation of mechanical and architectural objects. Prior to the development of AutoCAD, the company pioneered and patented what would become the core technology of computer-aided design (CAD) -dwg -in 1977. After releasing the first version of AutoCAD in 1982, Autodesk released its first Mac version in 1983 and Windows version in 1984.
In 1982, Autodesk introduced AutoCAD's predecessor, AutoCad Graphics, in a desktop app for the IBM PC. The first release of AutoCAD was based on the AutoCad Graphics program. In 1992, Autodesk released a stand-alone version of AutoCAD.
In 2000, Autodesk released AutoCAD 2000, replacing the stand-alone version with a plug-in for Microsoft Windows.
In 2010, Autodesk launched AutoCAD 2011, introducing a new user interface (UI) and new features. One new feature is Dynamic Input, which allows users to create objects by tracing and editing paths on a 2D diagram, similar to Microsoft Visio. Dynamic Input was announced at the 2010 Comdex event, the largest professional CAD software convention in the world. Another new feature introduced in AutoCAD 2011 is Dynamic Blocks, a feature allowing users to create repetitive models by manipulating complex objects. In 2014, Autodesk announced the availability of AutoCAD 2015, its most recent CAD release, at the 2014 Comdex event.

In May 2000 Autodesk acquired Digital Engineering Systems (DEC), creators of MicroStation, for US$250 million. In October 2003 Autodesk bought CGS Software, makers of 3-D CAD applications and digital terrestrial television. In March 2006, Autodesk acquired the Fitit Software (formerly known as DesignFits) joint venture with the former owner B.I.T.E. (Bureau International des Télécommunications Électroniques), and in July 2006, Autodesk announced the availability of a fit and hold function, meaning that the fit function only held as it meets all design requirements. In June 2007, Autodesk launched the third iteration of the DesignFits fit function, Autodesk DesignFits Fit 3.0.
