History
Early years
Roblox was founded by David Baszucki and Erik Cassel in 2004. In 2006, the website was released. Roblox is written in the web application programming interface Lua, which is free and open-source. It has been primarily funded by Roblox Corporation. As of 2015, Roblox has expanded to different platforms including mobile, and integration with social media.
Cassel's 1999 computer science degree from Western Washington University, while Baszucki's 1994 business degree from the University of Washington, Bothell, were instrumental in the creation of Roblox. The two created a degree program called Roblox University and made friends with a professor at Western Washington named Dave Galbraith. According to Cassel, the pair created Roblox to prove Galbraith's courses could work. Galbraith and team spent two years iterating on designs for the website, eventually relocating to the city of Bellevue, Washington, a popular place for tech innovation in the 1990s.
The original Roblox concept, designed by Cassel and Baszucki, featured a three-dimensional virtual environment where users could play games in a blocky, cartoon-like world. Each game on the website was structured like a block, which had a distinct visual style and programming language for users to create their own games.
The developers of Roblox also created the content creation system Ludo, an early graphical editing tool made for use by publishers
