This story – Indonesia’s worst atrocity and the biggest power struggle – is finally told in a powerful and moving film directed by Turino Junaidy.
The film, by the director of 2008’s The Search (Doa Harimau), showcases how history has been manipulated, through deceit, into winning us over.
Suharto was not the first corrupt president in Indonesia, but he is the first – or so he thought – to have brought his own people back to power by force.
This story will shock audiences and viewers, not only because it was the single greatest act of deception in modern Indonesian history – in which a criminal regime claimed to be a democratic one – but also because it revolved around one simple question: did Suharto commit mass murder or did he not?
Indonesia’s 1965 massacres are what kept the country’s army in power. So, if Suharto is guilty of mass murder, then why is he still the nation’s leader?
Turino says he has never been happier with a film in his life than Ancol. “I wanted to know why history never faced truth,” he says. “Why do we hear so much about the tragedies, and the rest is ignored.”
What lies beneath the massacre is that Suharto found himself at the crossroads of an age. What if he had chosen democracy?
“I have never seen history as history,” he explains. “History just fades in and out of the script that people write, even the things that are important to the people.
“The first thing I wanted to know was, is there any truth to this, and is it really just a myth?”
