CSU East Bay's Class of 2021, 
These last two years have been THE history of the millennium, and we're all quite aware of why. When I graduated in June of 2020, I was just finishing up my own thesis, a year-long project *entirely* about disaster preparedness. Even a full year's work on the subject of disasters didn't fully prepare me for the psychological reality of the multitude of events this year.
The Class of 2021 didn't just experience the leading edge of these events like I did - you carried out your Bachelor's, Master's, doctorate, whatever program you've been perusing - right smack in the middle of THE time of the millennium.
I don't use these descriptors as buzzwords when I say you've developed - and earned - a whole new level of resilience and perseverance. AND you're graduating at the same time. More power to you, my friends.
On behalf of the Class of 2020 and on behalf of all CSU East Bay, I want to warmly congratulate the Class of 2021 on your accomplishments in a *unique* time in world history. Every graduating class always has the problems of their time to take on when they graduate, but in *this* year, it is at a totally new level. But I'm not worried - in fact, I'm confident that this year in academia has rebuilt the mindset need to operate a world even through seemingly infinite uncertainty.
As final words of wisdom, these were ... incredible times, so to speak. But don't ever forget that this won't be the last time we'll have major events that turn the world inside-out. When those next times come, I trust the values of perseverance and preparation of this day and age will stay with you for as long as you carry out the work of putting our planet back together (and I mean that literally.)
