Plot
The film begins with a scene set in the 80s, during the waning days of the Reagan administration, where two young cops, Schmidt (Jonah Hill) and Hitchcock (Channing Tatum), are pursuing a group of high-speed car thieves called the "Speakers" across Los Angeles, California. They are aided by an informant, Vic (Mark Consuelos), and meet up with their commanding officer, Wittrock (Kevin Hart), who is about to leave the force due to feeling he has little to contribute. Wittrock arranges for Schmidt and Hitchcock to work together on a future unit as part of a higher-ups idea to use the two as a team.
Twenty years later, Schmidt (Hill) and Hitchcock (Tatum) are as bored as ever, sitting around eating pizza and working on their respective wives. They attend a red-carpet premiere where one of the "Speakers" (Donal Logue) attempts to pull a gun on a paparazzi who is not letting him leave the event. Schmidt and Hitchcock, still on the force, are called to the scene to assist a film producer named Bud Frump (Robert Wagner) and his daughter Bess (Sophia Bush), and witness the arrest of the "Speaker" by the Hollywood Police. Frump offers to write a movie about the pair, and Schmidt and Hitchcock agree to the offer.
However, the Speakers' handler, known only as (Black) Jack (Ice Cube), is a more brutal and violent criminal than his counterparts in the "Speakers". Schmidt and Hitchcock have to work with him to track down the rest of the gang. Their first task is to find out where Jack's hideout is. Meanwhile, Frump pressures the two into working on the movie, with a promise that the movie will lead to further police work.
