Claude Monet - The Water Lily Obsession
Claude Monet is one of the leading Impressionists and the inventor of impressionism. His palette, or more precisely the range of colours he uses, was an innovative proposition. He was the first to use bright colours in the paintings. He also painted unique water lily portraits and enjoyed creating portraits of friends and loved ones. Little did he know that these early paintings would become a permanent part of our collective memory.
Synopsis
In 1883 painter Claude Monet first rented a house in the French town of Giverny. After purchasing the property and adjoining land, the artist transformed an existing small pond into a water garden with water lilies and a Japanese-style bridge from which he could observe the water and the flowers. From 1899 to 1926, Monet painted more than 250 scenes devoted to the water lily theme, which became what he himself called “an obsession.”
Through a dialogue between Claude Monet and his old friend, stateman George Clemenceau, this contemplative VR experience invites the user on a sensory journey starting off in Claude Monet’s garden, stopping along the way at the workshop of the artist and ending in the exhibition rooms of the Orangerie Museum. The user is given the opportunity to relive a perpetual renewal of nature, to explore time and space while immersed in the Water lilies paintings.
This experience is the first episode of the Arte Trips collection, an immersive series in major works of art, co-produced by ARTE.
The VR experience, ‘Claude Monet – The Water Lily obsession’ has been shown for four months at the Orangerie Museum and has won the Vive Developer Award for the Best Arts & Culture Experience, a Silver Muse Award at the American Alliance of Mueums 2019, a special mention from the jury at the ARTFIFA 2019 and the Grand Prix PiXii at the Sunny Side of the Doc 2019.

Claude Monet was one of the greatest impressionists. An eclectic painter of all things French, he really managed to keep the French spirit alive and breathe life into the trees, the river, the sun and the irises. The water lily is one of his most famous works. It was one of his obsessions.
The most beautiful flowers in the world. Captured by the tide, blossoming in the shallow pond, transformed in flight or adrift. They represent for Monet a source of inspiration that was only to increase over the years. And they are still part of his creative universe today, 100 years after the artist’s birth.
For a century, Monet has painted at his water lily pond in the French town of Giverny. It is a site intimately linked to Monet’s creative process. But it is also the place where he has always found inspiration. He was a master of nature. He painted the blossoming of the water lily as a composition with light and shadows, the play of water and the rustling of the wind, all in a variety of colours and forms.
He was perhaps the first to use this new technique, the composition of a halo that became his trademark. Monet was an innovator. His works were often rejected, but then rediscovered and developed over time.
This immersion experience in an interpretation of the famous water lily paintings of Claude Monet tells the story of this pictorial journey. It allows the user to relive a perpetual renewal of nature, to explore time and space while immersed in Claude Monet’s Water lilies paintings.
The user is invited to explore the Orangerie Museum with the help of the museum’s guide to discover the emergence and development of Monet’s water lily paintings and get behind the scenes of the work.

In May 2013 artist Etienne Bilodeau was commissioned by ARTE France to create a VR video to accompany an exhibition.
The painting 'Boatyard', produced at the end of 2012, was presented at the International Film Festival of PORTOFINO 2015, where it received the David L. Wolper Grand Prix. The video is shot using a smartphone.The exhibition ‘The Monet Project’, a great French overview of the artist’s work, is currently on view in Lyon at the Musée des beaux-arts de Lyon from September 2 to November 25, 2016.
In 2012, French artist Vincent Pouzol collaborated with French patrimony association enetre and director Antoine Demols to create a 360° VR video of his painting ‘Reading Monet’. Published by ABP and brought to life in partnership with cinegrand and 3Dgaze. The movie is a homage to artist Georges Seurat.

Gabor Mate’s work is an exploration of the spiritual and psychological dimensions of human relationships in our time. Based on the premise that “self-destruction is the most urgent social crisis we face,” Mate argues that an eroding sense of responsibility toward our fellow human beings underlies this crisis. A crisis which, in the USA, is mirrored by a growing epidemic of violent behavior – murders by strangers and suicides.
In his films, Mate unfolds a psychological terrain in which the body is subject to an unprecedented assault by forces beyond our control. In his videos, the photographic sequences are often shot inside psychiatric and hospice facilities, while he draws inspiration from work by writers such as Franz Kafka, George Orwell and Charles Darwin.
