The Windows logo was originally assigned to Microsoft's Windows for Workgroups, released in 1985. Windows was later sold separately from MS-DOS and thus carried the Windows logo until Microsoft acquired it in October 1995, when it was assigned to Windows 95.

AutoCAD was built from the ground up to work specifically with the Acorn BBC Micro and its successor, the Acorn Archimedes. This allowed it to run natively on these machines, without the need for expensive third-party add-ons or an Acorn-specific version of the program, and supported all of the BBC's unique features, including its full-screen real-time screen refresh, the ability to display and edit complex textual and numeric information using the grid display, and the ability to create customised user interfaces.
AutoCAD was released for many different platforms, including Amiga, Apple II, Atari ST, DOS, IBM/PC (PC/AT), Mac OS, MP/M, and MS-DOS.

AutoCAD was originally developed by John Howe as a desktop extension for his bbc3D system. In 1979, Howe approached Mike May at Acorn Computers about incorporating the new system on the Acorn Archimedes, an advanced successor to the Archimedes. The company agreed, and AutoCAD was released on the BBC Micro in 1982. The system's first two version were 9.2 and 9.4, and were only available as a disk image, with the user needing to have a hardware Acorn machine to use it.
