Autodesk began developing AutoCAD in 1979, with the goal of creating a workstation app that would be as easy to use as traditional desktop drafting programs like AutoCAD are to artists, engineers, architects, and illustrators.
The initial AutoCAD release was called Planar, and shipped in December 1982. Planar was the first program that applied the "plotter-centric" approach of Microsoft to graphic editing, where the user could create and modify drawings by specifying exact coordinates. AutoCAD Planar was specifically designed for use on plotters and dedicated graphical workstations, and had a steep learning curve for the time.
In 1986, the concept of combining CAD and paper was incorporated into the program with the release of AutoCAD LT.
With the 1987 release of AutoCAD 2.0, the program's name changed to AutoCAD, which became the preferred name for the product. AutoCAD 2.0 also introduced several new features, including tools for connecting to network databases, including databases on magnetic tape, and basic text editing capabilities. Another major addition was the ability to link documents to one another.
With the release of AutoCAD 3.0, AutoCAD became a true production system capable of designing, drafting, and manufacturing. AutoCAD 3.0 introduced 2D and 3D features, and a capability to work with remote files in the network. The next year, AutoCAD 3.5 allowed users to submit work to a commercial print shop and to receive the output directly. The final major release of AutoCAD was AutoCAD 2004. In 2004, AutoCAD received an upgrade to AutoCAD LT; AutoCAD LT 2007 was followed by AutoCAD LT 2010.
AutoCAD 2010 is designed to be accessible and easy to use, whether a new user is using it to take their first steps or an experienced user is using it to work on large projects. AutoCAD 2010 also provides access to a wide range of other Autodesk products.
Autodesk discontinued selling AutoCAD in January 2019 and now offers AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD WS as AutoCAD successors.
