In 1982, Dennis Balsinger, Mike Mowbray, Rick DeMott and John Barber worked at PARC (Palo Alto Research Center) designing CAD software. Mowbray and Balsinger both worked at a Xerox Corp. research lab called PARC. This research lab was founded in 1972 by Charles P. P. Pemberton and funded by Xerox.
At the time, 3-D CAD software was a new concept. The idea of a CAD application was for computer design professionals to create 3-D objects for construction, product design, and many other purposes. In 1982, 3-D graphics were still in the earliest stages of development. CAD programs did not yet have the ability to automatically generate and apply complex shapes, planes, and perspective, so the user had to manually create the 3-D objects.
Autodesk's goal was to create a 3-D CAD system for the mass market. The creators of AutoCAD decided to go in a new direction; they created an application that could generate all the shapes, planes, and perspective on the screen. It could also model objects from a series of photographs.
The initial version of AutoCAD was designed by the PARC team and was written in assembly language and QuickCAD (also known as QCAD). They used the Xerox 9100A graphics system, which used an 8-bit microprocessor.
