Getting Started in AutoCAD
This section provides an introduction to the basic features of the AutoCAD drawing and drafting applications. The drawing and drafting features are provided on the Welcome screen and will be used throughout the following sections to explain the full range of available AutoCAD features.
Basic AutoCAD Features
AutoCAD software provides a wide range of drafting tools and drawing features, including:
Drafting and plotting tools: The drawing area, layout tools, and plotting tools are built into the program and easy to use.
Drafting commands: These commands can be used to do the most common drafting tasks, such as drawing arcs and rectangles, entering text, and modifying existing objects.
Drawing tools: A wide range of geometric drawing tools are available to help users create professional-quality drawings.
Methods: AutoCAD includes a wide range of methods to simplify drawing by providing automated ways to build objects and reduce or eliminate the need to create them manually.
Plotting tools: The plotting tools in AutoCAD help users design and publish professional-quality drawings.
Systems: The AutoCAD systems panel lets users manage drawings and reference objects in a drawing, as well as edit drawings created by others.

Design a Drawing
A drawing is a collection of objects that you combine with one another to create a representation of a project, product, or whatever it is that you are trying to accomplish. AutoCAD creates and manages drawings for you, so it’s easy to start working with a blank canvas and spend your time making drawings that are precisely what you want. You may also create a drawing template, and then save it so that you can reuse it later as the basis for a drawing you want to create. You’ll find the AutoCAD Drawing Template dialog box on the Welcome screen, under the Drawing Templates heading. You can then load the template drawing file into the drawing.
