Optical scanning devices such as a laser beam printer, a digital copying machine, and a laser facsimile machine include a polygon mirror for deflecting a light beam emitted from a light source by a predetermined angle and scanning the deflected light beam, and a fθ lens for forming an image on a photosensitive medium on the basis of a deflected light beam.
In order to achieve high-speed image formation in the optical scanning device, a light beam spot diameter must be reduced as much as possible.
In a conventional optical scanning device, a light beam is deflected by a polygon mirror, and the deflected light beam is condensed on a photosensitive medium by a fθ lens to form an image. The light beam spot diameter is proportional to a diameter of a reflecting surface of the polygon mirror, the angle θ of the deflected light beam, and the refractive index of an air medium between the polygon mirror and the fθ lens. When the reflecting surface of the polygon mirror is increased to reduce the light beam spot diameter, the diameter of the fθ lens is inevitably increased, thereby causing the optical system to be too large.
In order to reduce the light beam spot diameter, there is an idea that the angle of the polygon mirror is increased to condense the light beam on the photosensitive medium by the fθ lens. However, when the angle of the polygon mirror is increased, the light beam is excessively condensed on the fθ lens, and thus the light beam spot diameter is increased.
