Before the introduction of AutoCAD, the most common CAD program used by architects, engineers and construction professionals was a proprietary program called Astro. While Astro was quite popular, most Astro users and users of other 3D modeling programs switched to using generic 3D programs because Astro was a closed-source system (it was bundled with the user's computer, and not accessible to other software packages), and was not available on other platforms. Users were not given a license to use Astro after their subscription lapsed.
In 1975, Autodesk founder John Walker developed the first version of AutoCAD, a DOS-based graphics program that featured an internal video system, three-dimensional wireframe and solid modeling, and a viewport window. There was no provision for animation. While the software had no name at first, Walker eventually called it AutoCAD, after the acronym for the "Automatic Computer-Aided Design" function in a NASA document. The first implementation of AutoCAD took place in the mid-1970s using a 16Kb memory card in an Amstrad CPC compatible computer. For a time, there was no 'AutoCAD' trademark on the software and it was referred to in public documents and correspondence simply as "the CAD product."
In 1976, Autodesk introduced the ability to create three-dimensional views in AutoCAD, and this resulted in the first commercial development of a computer-aided drafting system. AutoCAD Version 1.0, released in 1982, was the first user-interactive software to allow the design of complex three-dimensional models. The system consisted of two major components: the software that allowed users to generate and manipulate three-dimensional models, and a programmable graphics display that used the video system to produce the final image of the model.

From the user's point of view
 AutoCAD is a software package that features a powerful drawing program, but for many users it is also a platform with which to automate tasks and create working drawings and maps from documents. Its modelling capabilities are particularly robust. AutoCAD 2011 is extensible in several ways: a new extension system, called Autodesk Exchange, lets developers integrate their own extensions into the program; the drawing engine is supported by an open platform called the Drafting and Annotation Services (DAS), which is now built into all AutoCAD releases; and all available software is extensible via the new system, which is described in greater detail in below in the section "Extensibility".
Software add-ons are now also capable of making changes to the interface, both through individual objects and through customization of the "desktop" environment, which is composed of all the windows that AutoCAD has open.
Additionally, products such as the free OnShape free software allow users to create parametric models in a format that can be used by AutoCAD.
From the user's perspective, AutoCAD can be used for more than just drawing. There are almost 100 different types of utilities and settings, from the simple Organizer function to a suite of specialized programs such as the software-based arc and spline tools. The map-editing tools allow creation of graphs, maps and even 3D models.
With all the tools that AutoCAD provides, it can be very difficult to decide which tool to use at any given point. This is particularly true for users who only know a basic command line, or for users who may not be familiar with the process of drawing. Autodesk has created a series of instructions for novice users on the AutoCAD website and in its Getting Started Guide, which allows users to create drawings step by step.
