The best friend of his victim's sister (believed to be kidnapped by the gangs) is raped, tortured and left for dead. In an attempt to free her, the policeman contacts the local priest, who convinces the cop to confront the gangs, which results in a blood bath. Afterward, the kidnapped girl runs away with the policeman and the priest in pursuit, encountering other gangs. They lead the cop and the girl to a desolate beach, where the girl is raped. A research doctor for the World Health Organization (WHO) in New Delhi, India, gets a phone call from the U.S. Center for Disease Control, who believes she may be carrying a deadly virus. On her way to Delhi, she is halted by an angry mob that catches her, and she is forced to be tested. She is the only woman in the area of Delhi. After hours of testing, the doctor comes out of her room where she has been isolated, and is nearly trampled to death in the crowd that is demanding her death. Then the mob turns against the WHO's team that is supposedly with the doctor and is trying to help her. Several of the people are arrested, and the doctor, feeling responsible, swears she will never use her "art" again. But then she receives the phone call from the CDC. The mob, now filled with fanatics, taunts her about her lust for death, about why she used the virus to control her own desires. But when she runs out of the door of her room, the mob is overwhelmed by her "surge of energy". The leader of the mob, who was unable to direct the others, is now dead.
After she completes the assigned tests, the doctor takes a shower to scrub off the ordeal of the mob's attack.
A lieutenant on leave in London runs into a prostitute, and they start talking about the end of the world. The woman says that the end of the world will be preceded by a murder and an immense reduction in social communication. She thinks this is because of the problems of information technology. She believes that the murder will be of a man and that the murderer will be a young woman, who is from a family that went out to sea during a storm and did not return.
