Indians living in different parts of the country tend to score differently when they are tested for depression. Taking a break from work or studying is the most common reason for visiting a doctor, but that won’t get you into treatment, according to a new paper.
The new study, a meta-analysis of 51 previous studies of antidepressants for people with depression, suggests that the so-called “weekend effect” may account for about a third of the effect of antidepressants. During the week, 40 per cent of patients received at least 50 per cent of a clinical effect from their antidepressants. After a weekend break, 28 per cent received at least 50 per cent of the effects of their antidepressants. During the first two weeks of treatment, 72 per cent of patients had at least 50 per cent of their antidepressants’ effect. After a weekend, 56 per cent of patients had at least 50 per cent of their antidepressants’ effect in the following week.
The paper, by Nicholas Garrison at Purdue University in West Lafayette, Indiana, and colleagues, is published in the Journal of Psychiatric Research.
“The implication is that if you happen to have a very acute course of antidepressant treatment and you have a brief, intense bout of treatment over the weekend, then you may not be fully benefiting from the treatment,” Garrison told New Scientist.
The problem, he said, is that patients who take their antidepressants on a week-long basis are already likely to have a better prognosis than those who use the medication for a shorter duration. So they may do better, even if they don’t actually show
