Reflection - the physical environment in student-centred learning
One of the problems of traditional classrooms is that students get lost, hide at the back or feel invisible to peers and teachers. Research shows relationships are vital to learning, and students learn best with collaboration, projects, real-world relevance and problem-solving. They need voice and choice. The reduced failure rate in such classrooms speaks for itself.
I have enjoyed learning about various student-centred classroom setups. I would particularly like to try having stations including a Maker Space (using math manipulatives/ experiments), Differentiation Stations where students can access material with assistive technology as needed, Gamefied Learning desks and space to work through problems at their own pace (eg My Imaths). I love the idea of a Google Room, with bright, creative spaces that are comfortable and allow choice and variety. Perhaps merged with this I'd like to try flexible seating. It makes sense that the student knows which environment they work best in and maximising their comfort and choice must be hugely beneficial. 
Perhaps my favourite physical classroom setup so far is a flipped classroom, where the teacher delivers 5-7 minute tutorials on the content which the students view asynchronously at home, at their own pace. This frees up class time for application, asking questions, peer tutoring, project-based enquiry and higher order thinking. My (short) experience of this during my teaching practical was exciting, and the students said it was their best lesson. 
Of course for this and other student-centred classrooms, certain technology is essential. Ideally students should have access to their own device, at least some of the time, and internet connection at home. Mobile whiteboards eliminate the need for "teacher up front". Large (5-9 seater) tables facilitating groupwork are helpful, as are several monitors for sharing information. Some of the tech tools which help students be learners and creators/ problem solvers are Unsplash, Soundjay and Emaze for presentations; Blooket and Quizizz for assessment and gamefied learning; and Screencastify/ Filmora for demonstrating mastery in a different way. Students should be encouraged to keep their best work in an e-Portfolio, for example on Google Sites.
I think the most important take-away is that teachers should be adaptable for the moment and the current need, willing to change and try new ideas in the physical environment, and students should be part of those decisions. I believe it will make the classroom more life-giving and effective not only for the students, but also for the teachers themselves.
