In 1988, AutoCAD was converted to run on microcomputers with integrated graphics controllers, and was ported to the Apple Macintosh in 1992. The first release of AutoCAD on the Apple Macintosh was known as MacDraft, and was able to run on a Mac Plus, which had an integrated graphics controller. The Apple Macintosh was able to use the earlier models of graphics controllers. These early Macintosh systems required a manual configuration of the BIOS and the VGA/VRAM (video RAM) memory on the computer, which is called setting the video BIOS (video BIOS) parameters. Starting with version 8, AutoCAD released for the Macintosh does not require these manual steps to run on the Mac.

First AutoCAD releases
The first AutoCAD was released on December 10, 1982, for MS-DOS PCs. AutoCAD was one of the first CAD software programs to be released for DOS PCs. The first release, AutoCAD 1.0, was made available for a $4,995 MS-DOS computer with a dedicated video card. In 1987, when the next release was shipped, AutoCAD was available on PCs priced at $19,995.
First Macintosh releases
AutoCAD 1.0 for the Apple Macintosh was released on February 24, 1992, after nearly one and one-half years of development. AutoCAD 1.5 on the Macintosh was released on August 26, 1994.
Macintosh port
In 1995, AutoCAD 2000 for the Macintosh was released as a $10,995 package, using the newly introduced QuickDraw GX graphics subsystem. Starting with version 16, AutoCAD for the Macintosh does not require manual setup of the VGA/VRAM memory. Instead, the software detects and automatically uses the available memory, no manual configuration is necessary. In order to use the QuickDraw GX graphics subsystem, the Macintosh computer must have a minimum RAM capacity of 2 MB and a graphics adapter with a minimum RAM capacity of 8 MB.

Data exchange 
In the past, products that were based on AutoCAD and used the DWG file format exported data to CADGAL, a data format based on XML. Starting in the 2006 release, DWG files exported to CADGAL using a new set of XML tags, called schema. This schema had some similarities with the StarOffice Open XML format. In 2013, this format changed and became more complex. In 2016, it changed again, this time with a format used by Autodesk Fusion 360 and other products, called Stand-alone interchange format (SDF).
When a DWG file is exported to CADGAL, it uses a schema in addition to the AutoLISP (AutoCAD LISP) which the CAD application uses to create its DWG file.
Schema 
AutoCAD uses the schema to keep track of AutoLISP function and variable values in the DWG file. As this schema is meant to be backward compatible with CADGAL it can't change over time, but the AutoLISP tags can be. If a DWG file uses a new version of the schema, it will fail to load in the CAD application.

AutoCAD's development process is often compared to that of a long development process for game consoles.  The first, and only version of AutoCAD (AutoCAD 1.0), was released in 1993, and was a DOS application. In the two years following the introduction of AutoCAD 1.0, AutoCAD 1.1 was released, but lacked many features. In 1995, AutoCAD 2.0 was released, which was a DOS application, with a graphics API (Windows 3.0) and a Windows GUI. The later AutoCAD 3.1 product and AutoCAD 2002, were fully rewritten for Windows XP, and by this time had the user interface of AutoCAD 2000.
