One of the most common problems in Photoshop is not being able to find or identify the proper menu options, which is not helped by the fact that the tools are often hidden.
Understanding Photoshop Elements
As its name implies, Photoshop Elements is targeted at users who don't need the more complex image editing functions of Photoshop, especially those related to working with large files.
The program focuses on small, medium, and large-format camera images, such as 10MB to 8MB, 16MB to 4MB, and 8MB to 10MB, respectively, as well as computer images.
It doesn't include much hardware support for RAW formats, but it does support the most common media formats, including TIFF, JPEG, and GIF.
As of this writing, Elements also supports the following operating systems, as shown in Figure 10-1:
• Windows XP SP3 and Windows Vista (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Windows 7 (32-bit and 64-bit)
• Mac OS X 10.5.1 and Mac OS X 10.6 or later

Photoshop's functionality can be increased by installing trial versions of other Photoshop software such as Photoshop CS6, Adobe Bridge, and Adobe Photoshop Elements Pro, as well as various plug-ins.
When installing the trial version of Photoshop Elements, you must create a Photoshop version identification number (a.k.a. the serial number) by clicking the Windows Control Panel's System icon on the main menu bar and clicking the About Photoshop option from the window that appears.
The serial number needs to match the serial number on the sticker on your Photoshop CD to maintain the validity of the software. Click the Scan Serial Number option to automatically generate a unique and valid serial number for your computer.
When working with both Photoshop and Photoshop Elements, you can use the automatic project management system to help you sort through large volumes of materials, as shown in Figure 10-2. Adobe recommends using the local storage server on your computer to back up images.

Photoshop Elements offers a wide variety of editing tools, including brightness, contrast, and levels adjustments. Some of the more common ones are highlighted in Table 10-1.

Requirements
This article assumes that you have basic computer knowledge and basic knowledge of the Windows operating system.
Your computer has to be able to run the installer.
You have to have a Microsoft Windows 7, 8 or 10 computer.
This article uses Windows 7 as the operating system, but many of the instructions have been written to be compatible with any version.
You have to have the Microsoft Image Composite Editor 5 or higher.
The previous versions of the Microsoft Image Composite Editor do not have the same range of features as Image Composite Editor 5.
Before you start, make sure you have the latest security and software updates for your operating system. Your computer must also be virus and spyware free.
You have to have a valid Adobe Photoshop Elements subscription. If you have a subscription that is expiring, the time to renew your subscription can also be found in the instructions.
The software is free, so you don’t have to spend any money in order to use it.
It is important to know that Photoshop Elements is not the same as Photoshop. There are significant differences between the two, and many of Photoshop Elements’s features are outside the scope of this article. If you aren’t familiar with Photoshop and find yourself confused by Photoshop Elements, you can also use GIMP instead.
You will only need to download the installer once. You won’t need to install the software each time you start the computer. After the download, there is nothing more you need to do. You won’t need to download anything else.

Installing Photoshop Elements
Open a web browser and search for "adobe.com" (without the quotation marks) and follow the instructions.
Once you have Adobe download software, type "photoshop" into the search box and press enter.
Select Photoshop Elements (version 17.0) and press the Install button.
The Adobe Software Installer window displays.
Click Install and agree to the terms and conditions.
Click Next.
In the Features tab, scroll down to the bottom of the list and click Yes.
In the License Type box, select the option that says I accept the terms and conditions.
Click Next.
You will need to enter the product key.
