There were two early versions of AutoCAD 1.0. The first version, released in December 1982, was an in-house version for Bendix, with some enhancements added by Autodesk employees, and the second version was a beta version released for ACUG testers in March 1983. AutoCAD will always be backwards compatible with previous releases, so a programmer will not need to be concerned with not being able to read an older format file.
 There are two main editions of AutoCAD: CAD Manager (formerly AutoCAD LT) and Autodesk AutoCAD 2010, 2011 and 2012. CAD Manager also runs on Mac, as AutoCAD Mac. Autodesk AutoCAD 2012 runs as 64-bit and comes on a DVD or download. The older editions run in 32-bit mode only. AutoCAD 2012 is the version used for the current standard, called "AutoCAD 2012" or just AutoCAD.
AutoCAD LT 
AutoCAD LT (formerly AutoCAD LT) was developed by a group of independent programmers.  Its launch was preceded by some technical difficulties with the original AutoCAD.  AutoCAD LT originally ran in 32-bit mode, and was developed to run on Windows 95 and later Windows operating systems.  The only editions of AutoCAD LT available at launch were 1997 and 2000.  The newer 2008 and later versions run in 64-bit mode.  Today, most, if not all, of the earlier versions of AutoCAD LT are no longer available as separate software products from Autodesk.  
 AutoCAD LT is now a part of the AutoCAD family.  Its development is now led by Cadsoft.  The software is offered on disk as well as via the Autodesk application download website. The product used to be available as a licensed fee product, but since 2000, it is a free product.  The AutoCAD LT files produced in earlier versions could be opened by newer versions, but that is not possible for new versions.  Files from earlier versions can be opened only by older versions.
