AutoCAD LT is a free, Web-based and fully functional version of AutoCAD. This version was developed by Autodesk as a solution for consumers, small businesses, and schools who use desktop computing devices and want to do some drafting or CAD tasks online.
AutoCAD LT is available for Windows, macOS, and iPad. AutoCAD LT 2020 for Mac, Android, iPad, iPhone, and Windows 10 devices is currently in beta. While AutoCAD LT is free, there are limitations. You can only open one AutoCAD LT workspace at a time, you can only save drawings in.DWG or.DWGx format, and most importantly, you can only save your work when you're using the Web browser version of AutoCAD LT.
AutoCAD LT is composed of three modules: AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD LT Web, and the Web Workspace Manager. All three modules can be accessed online using the web browser, which allows you to work with multiple AutoCAD LT files, and open new drawings. The free Web Workspace Manager is only available when you access the web via the Internet. The AutoCAD LT Web module allows you to open files in.DWG format from your hard drive, and to view all drawings in an AutoCAD LT workspace regardless of what AutoCAD LT version you use.

Usage in schools and universities
Use of AutoCAD is growing in schools and universities. In the United States, the National Center for Education Statistics estimates that as of the 2000–01 academic year, there were 18,418 architecture-related courses taught in K–12 schools (grades 9–12), including professional practices in construction and design. In 2001, the total number of architecture-related courses had increased to 19,053.  By the 2010–11 academic year, the number of architecture-related courses was 19,187. As of 2012, over 2 million people are employed by the architectural and engineering industries.
History
In the early 1970s, the capability of graphic systems was insufficient for the kind of work often performed by architects. In 1976, AutoCAD was introduced, at first designed to do mostly drafting, but later extended to cover many of the functions previously handled in multiple overlapping steps.
In the early 1980s, the ability of AutoCAD to deal with complex drawings was still limited and difficult to master. In 1982, the first software for architectural design was introduced. The first edition of AutoCAD for Architecture was based on a core set of AutoCAD drawings developed by a dozen architects.
