Miriam is a tool for the remote control of the PC.
It is a replacement for the standard software "Miriam".
It aims to be more user friendly and adds some extra features for daily use.
Well... i guess i'm really late to the party, but I like the program.
Thanks to anybody who made MiriServer.
I was always annoyed by the settings and stuff that Miriam used to have, so I wrote my own replacement in C++, and it's called "RemoteControl2".
Unlike Miriam, it's 100% Freeware and
Some configurability tweaks, so it should be easier to use.
The easiest way to install is to drop its files into the program directory.
By default it will try to run in background. But you can also set it to open up in a windows form (and also choose which Windows form to open up).
Also, it will send the settings you select, to the executable, so there is no need to "eject" the settings unless you want to be able to change the settings at another time.
You also have the option of setting up it to run in background, or as a single application (in the taskbar).
If you want to know how to change the settings, including the names of the sections, and their contents, here's a screenshot of how it looks on Windows 7:
There is also a "Restart" button for Windows 2000, XP, and later.
And, if you're worried about the settings, all the settings are encrypted in an XML file, and the settings file will be rewritten if you change settings.

If you don't like this, there is a way to make the background window a desktop icon, or you can even make it ask you for desktop and/or start menu.
Back in the pre-XP days, when I'd written the program, Microsoft had put some restrictions on the program's use and functionality.
Those days are past now, so you can use any version of Windows, any whatever. You can use any distance between the IR control device and the PC, as long as the latter is on.

1. In order to operate a PC with a remote control you need a computer with a IR-receiver like the serial port and also an IR-receiver like mouse or a TV remote control like the new IR-receivers for old TVs.
2. Get an Internet connection to download the Miriam client (or take a floppy disk or CD)
3. Install the server software MiriServer (MiriamServer) and start it (If you are using Windows XP you can find it under Startmenu, System -> Programs -> MiriServer)
3. Select a remote control (for example mouse/TV remote control or any other...)
4. Choose one or more operations you want to be performed by your remote control, there are four possibilities (see diagram)
a. Ring your doorbell (if your burglar-alarm is connected to your computer)
b. Page up (if Winamp is running)
c. Page down (if Winamp is running)
d. Change the volume (if Winamp is running)
5. Start the process with your remote control
You can select in which order the operations shall be performed, you can for example start the protocol with the remote control and then change the volume or start the protocol with the volume and then jump to the end of the presentation or ring the doorbell without jumping.
I installed the Server and the Client on my Windows 7-PC. The Server was launched but nothing appeared on my remote control. I tried to find some configuration of the installation but I did not get any. The Client was installed correctly and also in the right folder but the remote control did not show anything. I will try again but there is little chance to find anything.
