History
AutoCAD was originally developed by Robert Stephenson and Associates (RSA) from 1980 to 1982, to increase productivity of individual drafting artists. RSA’s first production CAD system was called BIRM, and was the first commercial CAD system to allow users to graphically design on 2-D drawings. BIRM used fixed-width design tables, no form or dimensioning, and it was not a direct descendant of the drafting tradition.
As AutoCAD grew in popularity, it was eventually turned over to new owner Autodesk in 1982. At that time, the software was integrated with the new form and dimensioning tools and dedicated to graphic design on paper.
AutoCAD evolved to include two-dimensional (2-D) drawings, computer-aided drafting (CAD) tools, construction, 3-D modeling, engineering applications and many other features to appeal to a wide range of end users and professional designers.
