Does NEC Test Pattern Generator provide an option to change the size of the black bars?
When I increase the black bar size, this actually seems to reduce the width of the monitor as if the gamma is being effected? Is this a correct assumption?
I was hoping to use this to test an HDTV I just got out of the box. However I can’t find the VGA mode. I do have a DVI to HDMI cable which isn’t recognized. I just get a blank screen with no text and a black bar.
I have connected my monitor to my computer and it is showing the picture in the status bar at the top of my computer screen.
I turned on ‘NEC Test Pattern Generator’, but it still does not work. (‘No image on display’)

I highly doubt that NEC would make a program like that available.
The NEC test pattern generator does not provide the necessary output to test or calibrate to a HDTV.
If you have your HDTV connected to a PC monitor (e.g. Microsoft Windows Display Driver), then it will look like your computer display.
The NEC test pattern generator is designed to test PC’s monitor using analog VGA input connections.
Since a HDTV uses Digital Video Interface (DVI), NEC can’t make a program like that available.
I am having trouble connecting this to my computer – it detects the monitor, but when I click the ‘test’ icon, the screen turns black. My monitor is connected via DVI, is it possible to connect this to a DVI port?
I’m running Windows Vista and I’m getting the same problem with the black screen. All the resolutions are working on my test images and the screen is connected with DVI. Any ideas?

NEC Test Pattern Generator is a Windows freeware which should support the monitors included in the list of supported ones.
No guarantees are made in terms of hardware or software support, though.
NEC Test Pattern Generator is a low-impact application which does what it says.
It’s supposed to be used to calibrate or adjust the monitor’s colors and brightness, and also to compare the results of other tests, which offer you a quick and easy way to examine the whole aspect of a monitor.
A number of different test patterns are provided, one for each of the monitor’s colors, including white balance, saturation, contrast and resolution.
You can adjust them all, but the interface is a bit inelegant, so it’s not really intuitive, and there’s no help manual either.
That aside, NEC Test Pattern Generator is a nice concept and does what it says: it provides you with what you want to test the monitor for. It lets you pick from a multitude of different test patterns and you can adjust them all, and it works even if your computer’s not connected to the Internet.
That’s the main reason why we can recommend it even to someone who is not yet very experienced with image adjustments.

You can get a quick idea of how your monitor performs with a color spectrum test, for example, you can see the colors from the whole spectrum in three color channels.
For white balance, you can check how the monitors deal with various colors, showing you the color performance in terms of saturation, temperature and hue.
You can select from a number of other tests, such as resolution, brightness or contrast.
All these tests can be run in a full screen display.
