Usage
The standard product from Autodesk is AutoCAD LT. It is typically used by people who do mostly drafting but who also want to create files with graphics. It is a more flexible product than AutoCAD Professional, but this flexibility comes at a cost. It is less capable of producing high quality images. AutoCAD LT is optimized for compatibility with older operating systems and hardware.
The most popular variant of AutoCAD is AutoCAD R20. While it is somewhat cheaper than the original AutoCAD, it is still quite expensive (around US $400) for an entry-level program. However, it is one of the most powerful applications and is widely used in industry.
In the past decade, there has been a large growth in the number of free and open-source applications for CAD. Some of them are easier to use than AutoCAD, some are free but have limited functionality, and some are free and open-source (some are at least partly proprietary), with a good level of functionality. While these applications may be more suitable for hobbyists and non-designers, a few of them are quite good.
This article will describe a set of freely available open-source applications for the design of sheet metal parts.
AutoCAD LT
AutoCAD LT (released in 1994) is a free, cross-platform (Windows, macOS and Linux) application. It is based on the concept of the earlier AutoLISP macro program AutoCAD for Autodesk Studio.
It is a full-featured, easy-to-learn, full-featured drawing package with a complex modelling and finite element analysis (FEA) package. It is simple to use and has a user-friendly GUI. It has many features that are useful for CAD, drafting and 3D printing.
AutoCAD LT was designed for the novice user who is starting a project and needs a relatively simple solution. It can also be used by professionals.
There are many commercial packages for the same task, so this article compares a more recent, free, open-source package, to AutoCAD LT.

The AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD Web App user interfaces are designed with web standards in mind to make them accessible on a wide range of devices. The native AutoCAD Applications, which have been released since AutoCAD 2014, run only on macOS and Windows and also use web standards for user interfaces.
AutoCAD is designed to run with several user interfaces. The default GUI is usually the "classic" user interface; however, it also supports a Windows XP or newer-style GUI which resembles Windows XP, the original graphical user interface (GUI) for Windows (or Windows 2000), and it can also support a UNIX/X Windows graphical user interface. AutoCAD also supports a browser-based graphical user interface, such as AutoCAD LT Web App.
AutoCAD provides new functionality in the newer releases that was not available in previous releases, including the ability to use smartphones to interact with the application. AutoCAD for Windows Mobile is available in Windows Mobile 7, 8, and 10. AutoCAD LT for iOS devices is available for iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch devices. AutoCAD App Studio is a cloud-based service that allows developers to create and distribute AutoCAD plugins and applications. AutoCAD Web App, a web browser-based application which allows for some editing of 3D drawings in 2D space, was introduced in AutoCAD 2014. AutoCAD 2018 added a Web API. AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD 2010 are not yet capable of importing CAD drawings created with Web App.
3D viewers and editors
AutoCAD LT and AutoCAD 2010 support the viewing of two types of 3D models: 3D-capable AutoCAD drawings and 3D drawings created with the other AutoCAD 3D applications.
