2015 Military Exercise Jade Helm 15 Conspiracy Theories The conspiracy theories were based on the US military exercise Jade Helm 15, which took place between July 15 and September 15, 2015 in several US states. The exercise, which involved 1,200 people from four of the five branches of the US military, was designed to train soldiers in the skills needed to operate in unfamiliar combat environments, including maneuvering among civilians. Reports of these exercises have raised concerns and fueled conspiracy theories that the exercises were a hostile military takeover.2 Details of the exercise Joint Realistic Military Training (RMT), known as Jade Helm 153, was sponsored by the United States Special Operations Command (USSOCOM or SOCOM)4 and included the United States Army Special Operations Command (USASOC) and the Joint Special Operations Command (JSOC) with other US military units in several states, including Texas, Arizona, Florida, Louisiana, Mississippi, New Mexico and Utah. The declared goal was to improve the capabilities of special forces within the framework of the national security strategy. It was coordinated and directed from Eglin Air Force Base, an Air Force Materiel Command (AFMC) base in northwest Florida. About 1,200 soldiers participated in the exercise.5 They were primarily Army Green Berets, but also a small group of Navy SEALs and Air Force Special Forces, as well as regular Army infantry, although USSOCOMs initial request to government officials mentioned elements of the US Marine Corps.
