SpeedCAD was a hit. AutoCAD's creator, Chuck Peddle, saw the utility as a way of convincing CAD users to switch to a more professional-style drafting application. In May 1982, Chuck contacted Koenig and offered to take over SpeedCAD, with the proviso that any subsequent releases would be completely new. A few days later, Andrew Koenig and Chuck Peddle joined forces and began work on a new product called AutoCAD.
The first AutoCAD shipped in November 1982 on the Apple II and introduced the concept of having a single user interface for a number of different CAD functions. It was a graphic interface rather than a text-based interface (as many previous CAD programs were), and could take advantage of the graphics capabilities of the computer to allow features such as the display of color, the display of shading, and the display of animations.
