Backwards Machine is a collection of three effects. The REVERSER effect reverses the incoming audio, which overlaps the first few samples of the original (i.e., forwards) audio. After the first few samples, the reversed and forwards audio are cross-faded. The TIME control (slider) sets the delay of each snippet (audio window) on the audio wave. The feedback control (slider) controls the amount of reverb that is "added" to the reversed sound. The WET MIX control (slider) allows you to adjust the amount of wet (effect) signal relative to the dry (non-effect) input signal. The DRY MIX control allows you to adjust the amount of dry sound relative to the wet sound.
The REVERSER effect is very easy to use. Simply drag the REVERSER button on your VST host software control panel to the left or right (according to which preset you are using). This button is available throughout the Backwards Machine interface.
If you are using Windows Vista, you may be asked for permission to use "Effect Shortcuts", or you may be asked if you want to allow the VST host software to use “Windows DirectSound audio”.
When the REVERSER button is "off", you hear the original (forward) signal (depending on your REVERSER setting). When the REVERSER button is "on", you hear the reversed signal (depending on your REVERSER setting).
Note: If you are using the default settings (TIME of 2 seconds, 100% WET MIX, and 0% DRY MIX), the REVERSER button sounds like an internal speaker. If you would like to use a different speaker or headset, please specify this in your VST host software settings.
The TIME control works the same way as REVERSER. However, the TIME slider does not change the pitch of the original signal, only the delay of the audio window. As a result, the TIME control is significantly different from the REVERSER setting.
After you drag the TIME slider to the left, the audio sample is delayed by time * TIME (where TIME is the number of seconds you have selected). If you drag the TIME slider to the right, the audio sample is delayed by time (TIME * TIME * 2).
