Roblox is owned by Midway, an interactive entertainment company in Frisco, Texas, USA. Midway was founded in 1972 by Herman Kahn, who also founded the Kahnlab in 1963, which is the organization responsible for the original SimCity and other games. The company's name stems from an old-time talk show host named George Herman "Dutch" Robelot, who hosted a popular program in the 1940s called "Krazy Kars" (later revived as Car 54, Where Are You?).
Live streaming platform Twitch, which hosts live video game streams, became a partner of Roblox and contributed to the company's first "live stream for educational purposes". At the time, a handful of research labs were streaming games made on Roblox, including the University of Georgia's Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering, which hosted the first ever Roblox stream. The first educators to stream games made on Roblox included Matt Levi, who has been a streamer on Twitch since 2012 and who is known for his series "MattsLegacy" (after his nickname), and Christopher Thaile, a professor at the University of Alabama.
In September 2013, Warner Brothers announced that it would acquire Midway and rename it as a division of the company. In December 2013, Midway signed an agreement with Disney to integrate the Roblox platform into the Disney Infinity product line, in exchange for Disney maintaining ownership of the platform.
