AutoCAD is a powerful tool for designing and drafting. It is best used in combination with other software, such as CAD-Plotter (3D printer software) or CAD-Pro/CAD-Viewer (computer aided design) or AutoCAD mobile. However, AutoCAD can also be used for making simple drawings (with no vector features) and as a layout software application. A handy but unintuitive feature of AutoCAD is that it requires a graphic user interface (GUI) for efficiency and productivity.
AutoCAD is the only software product that requires a commercial license to be used by non-commercial users. The license includes an online Student version of AutoCAD, for educational use only. For most people, the full commercial version of AutoCAD is enough.
AutoCAD history
AutoCAD is the last remaining product of Autodesk. It is Autodesk’s first offering in the drafting market, and was created in response to the success of other early CAD products such as Draw (software) and Desk-top Publishing System (DTP). The AutoCAD GUI (graphical user interface) was the first true CAD GUI and is derived from GE’s first DTP product, the GE-DDP (Desk-top Publishing System). The first version of AutoCAD, released in 1982, was an inexpensive entry-level product that proved extremely popular. AutoCAD II, released in 1984, had many more features, and was one of the first products to run on Intel-based personal computers. This was accompanied by a change in pricing, from around $100 to over $500. In 1985, AutoCAD III was released, bringing the price back down to the $100 range. Over the next few years, the price increased, mostly due to the graphics card, graphics processor and hard drive. AutoCAD 4 was released in 1989, with a price of about $5,000. However, by the mid 1990’s, there was much less of a market for this product, and the price dropped to about $500. AutoCAD 2005 was released in 1996, and was the first version to run on Windows NT. The price of AutoCAD software was now around $1,500, and is where it remains today.

Future development
AutoCAD is currently in use by the architects at the headquarters of the United States government and their various offices around the country as well as other industrial and commercial companies. Its use is not limited to the US. In 2017, AutoCAD was used by an estimated 50,000 architects in China, according to the China Bureau of Building Information (CBBI). In May 2019, Kapsch was selected by ArcGIS as the mapping technology and solution provider for ArcGIS Cloud.
A CADGnome feature and the capability to read DXF, dwg, and dgn files has been added in AutoCAD 2010, the release following AutoCAD LT 2010. It provides the capability to create and edit.dwg and.dgn files.
In January 2013, Autodesk unveiled BIM 360, the open architecture for construction services, and announced the AutoCAD Architecture Suite to be the first 3D-CAD software application to support the BIM 360 Architecture standard. Autodesk Revit Architecture is also expected to be released in 2013.
AutoCAD 2020
AutoCAD 2020 was announced in July 2014 and was released on October 19, 2015. It has been released in three editions: Classic, Premium, and Ultimate. All three editions are available for download from the Autodesk website.
