Autodesk officially released AutoCAD in 1989 for the Apple Macintosh II, III, and IIx (collectively, the IIgen). In 1995, version 2.5 was released for the Apple Macintosh, the IBM-compatible PC, and Microsoft Windows. This is considered the first version of AutoCAD. Two years later, Autodesk bought Alias Systems Corporation (the company that created Alias and Magix DGN), and rebranded its product portfolio as Autodesk.
The debut of AutoCAD in the software industry included a radical "re-design" of the user interface and innovative programming features like constraints, advanced interpolation and integral curves. This was the first time the industry had seen native support for 3D rendering and advanced drawing capabilities. As a result, AutoCAD was immediately successful among CAD users.
The software supports a wide variety of output devices and software. AutoCAD was one of the first graphics packages to support the emerging multimedia environment of the 1990s.
