With the help of a suitable stress perturbation and a calculation of a virtual crack axis, it is possible to get detailed information about the actual course of a crack and its growth.
Traditionally, for a ductile crack, three fracture criteria are used to predict crack growth:
"static" energy release rate
"dynamic" energy release rate
'static' fracture toughness

This is a differential equation describing the growth of a crack. To solve the equation, one has to specify the boundary and initial conditions. For the boundary conditions one has to provide the crack tip location. In order to account for a crack-closing transition, a third (non-axisymmetric) boundary condition has to be specified. For the initial conditions, a small displacement is assumed.
Non-local energy dissipation methods
To analyze crack propagation, one usually takes a small perturbation to the stress state of the system. The crack is then represented as a small perturbation to the stress state:
where  is a small displacement vector and  is a small crack surface vector. The resulting differential equation is then solved numerically.
For local methods, the typical resolution used to represent a crack surface is of the order of 10−6 to 10−8 m. It corresponds to about 100 lattice elements. For non-local methods, a resolution of 10−7 m is commonly used. This is about 1,000 lattice elements. Non-local methods also allow to probe an arbitrarily large crack, whereas in the local method the crack length is limited to 1 µm.

As a conventional process of purifying and recovering a crude product of high purity which is obtained by refining crude oil, the following process, for example, has been proposed. First, crude oil is refined and separated into a naphtha fraction, a kerosene fraction, a gas oil fraction and a heavy oil fraction. Then, the heavy oil fraction is hydrogenated.
The naphtha fraction is subjected to a catalytic cracking process to obtain light naphtha and fuel oil. The kerosene fraction is subjected to a catalytic cracking process to obtain naphtha, gas oil, and fuel oil. The gas oil fraction is subjected to a hydrorefining process to obtain gas oil. In this manner, a crude product of high purity which is obtained by refining crude oil can be recovered.
Incidentally, as a method for refining crude oil, a solvent refining method is known. In the solvent refining method, crude oil is refined by contacting with a mixed solvent of light paraffin and heavy paraffin, a mixed solvent of light naphtha and heavy naphtha, or a mixed solvent of light paraffin and light naphtha.
For example, a process for producing an alkylate with a mixed solvent of light paraffin and heavy paraffin is described in Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open (kokai) No. 1-280760. This process is a process in which paraffin wax contained in crude oil is refined by contacting crude oil with a mixed solvent of light paraffin and heavy paraffin.
Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open (kokai) No. 7-123080 discloses a process in which paraffin wax contained in crude oil is refined by contacting crude oil with a mixed solvent of light naphtha and heavy naphtha.
Furthermore, Japanese Patent Application Laid-Open (kokai) No. 8-47382 discloses a process in which crude oil is refined by contacting crude oil with a mixed solvent of light paraffin and light naphtha.Your browser is no longer supported
