Overview
AutoCAD allows users to draw, edit, measure, manage and animate 2D (2-dimensional) and 3D (3-dimensional) elements, assemblies, drawings, models, and drawings. 2D drawings include orthographic, plan, and perspective views, as well as cross-sections and sections. 3D drawings include parametric solid geometry models. All 2D and 3D drawings can be defined in a DWG, DXF or DWG format. Viewing and editing data can be performed with an accompanying CAD viewer. The tool bar contains many tools that allow users to modify and view data.
Version history
AutoCAD was initially released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on microcomputers with internal graphics controllers. Before AutoCAD was introduced, most commercial CAD programs ran on mainframe computers or minicomputers, with each CAD operator (user) working at a separate graphics terminal. AutoCAD was the first commercially successful CAD application. It was named the "Auto" CAD application for its automated feature and the "CAD" in the title to denote that it was a CAD application. This application made CAD user friendly.
The very first version of AutoCAD was limited to the ability to draw a single geometric element and view the result in perspective. This version of AutoCAD did not have any of the other features that would be added to the software later on. The first versions were written using a straightforward graphic programming language which was easier to use than other proprietary languages such as in CADRESS or CHARM. Version 1.0 had approximately 130 commands, one of which was always kept, the Command Line, and was used for interactive work. This version was considered a good starting point for AutoCAD users, as it allowed for easy editing of model lines.

Models 
Various types of models exist, ranging from simple 2D geometry to complex 3D CAD files.
These can be stored in either DWG or DXF format, and in addition to 2D and 3D there is a 2.5D variant that creates a 2.5D drawing, with horizontal and vertical dimensions, that has no real room for objects that could be considered to be flat.
Standard models 
Standard models are used to quickly create simple drawings. These are generally planar geometry, with dimensions and annotations. Standard model files are stored in DXF, DWG or DWF (see below).
The standard model file format is based on the older DGN standard. Drawings created with the standard model file are generally called "DGN". The standard model file format is found in standard AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT editions.
Advanced models 
Advanced models are used to create high-quality drawings that have 3D geometry and 2D annotation. These are generally fully parametrized with 3D geometry. Advanced model files are stored in either DXF or DWG format, and in addition to 2D and 3D there is a 2.5D variant that creates a 2.5D drawing, with horizontal and vertical dimensions, that has no real room for objects that could be considered to be flat.
The advanced model file format is based on the newer ACIS format. AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT version 2015 introduced the AD-DGN format, an improved version of the ADG (or "DGN") format. This is a binary format that is the basis for both ACIS and DWF models.
Newer advanced models include DWF and PDF. DWF files are specifically designed for CAD applications to view or print. PDF files are similar, and are used to exchange data among CAD software.
Native applications 
Native AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT applications are created using the native API, through the application programming interface (API) for AutoCAD. Native applications for AutoCAD, AutoCAD LT, AutoCAD Architecture, AutoCAD Electrical and AutoCAD Civil 3D allow for native applications to be created without the use of AutoLISP or Visual LISP.
