As a method of recording and reproducing audio, video and other information, a magneto-optical disc has become popular. Among others, a magneto-optical disc of a diameter of about 50 mm is called a mini-disc.
A magneto-optical disc drive apparatus comprises a magneto-optical disc of a diameter of about 50 mm and a light beam such as a laser beam, and carries out reading and writing of information to and from the magneto-optical disc by using the light beam.
In a conventional magneto-optical disc drive apparatus, the light beam emitted from a semiconductor laser is focused by an objective lens and, at the same time, converged by a light diffusing plate and is thereby formed as a light spot on the magneto-optical disc, to thereby write information to the magneto-optical disc or read information from the magneto-optical disc. The spot diameter of the light beam is about 3.mu.m.
The light beam having been converged by the light diffusing plate is emitted to the magneto-optical disc in a converging manner. When the light beam is converged in a diameter of about 3.mu.m on a magneto-optical disc, the light beam is converged in a diameter of about 10.mu.m on a magneto-optical disc on which a signal track is formed, and the light beam is illuminated to the signal track.
In a case of reading information from the magneto-optical disc, the reflected light from the magneto-optical disc is detected by a light detector and, then, converted into an electric signal.
