A page calling on lesbian, gay, bisexual and transgender Americans to not identify as “queer” was removed from the website of the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops.
The document was on the website of the Bishops’ conference until Tuesday.
It was included in a section titled “Inclusive Language,” and urged people to say “LGBTQ” instead of “queer.”
“Because there is no such thing as a ‘queer’ community,” it states. “Queer communities are human communities that are plural, diverse and subject to change.”
LGBT groups said they were concerned that the document would confuse, and was a pretext for, an attempt to erase LGBT people from their communities.
“The organization is really concerned that the Bishops is going to try to hide their anti-LGBT campaign behind this rebranding thing,” Michael Tee said.
He said the Catholic Church, and some of its allies, “want to put a wedge between LGBTQ people and our relationships to each other and to other people.”
“This is an example of a strategy that LGBT people in our communities have seen before,” Tee said.
Te’Mawesha Nash, CEO of the Independent Women’s Forum, said she was concerned the document was part of “a wider push to remove LGBTQ people from the U.S. government, from the public spaces.”
“It’s a tremendous opportunity lost for the Catholic Church to have a seat at the table for a discussion about what is most essential to our lives,” she said.
Nash said the Catholic Church has worked hard, and was “one of the most important drivers” of the marriage equality movement.
“And yet at the same time they are trying to erase their part in the movement,” she said.
She said when the document was taken down, the Independent Women’s Forum sent out a link to a blog post by her that said, “we’re celebrating that gay people, in particular, will no longer be so oppressed
