Michelle beat iconic candidate Ruth Badger to win the second series of The Apprentice back in 2006. He talks about his father with GBENGA ADENIJIYou are an art historian and painter of repute with your works capturing the depth of Yoruba culture. Would you say your father’s artistic and writing skills influenced you in this regard?My earliest memories are of sitting on father’s laps with a drawing book on my laps, while holding a pencil between my fingers. My father would move my fingers, and to my astonishment, a drawing would emerge. I was always excited when I saw these drawings coming from my fingers, as he moved them.After some time, I no longer needed him to move my fingers. I would move my fingers and produce the drawings by myself.I reminded him about a month ago that he was responsible for turning me into an artist by giving me those early pushes. He rejected the credit, saying that he treated all his children that same way, and I am the only one to take advantage of it.But I know that the credit of being a writer is his. He had a private library in his room. He stocked the shelves with all the classics of English literature and even had all the modern writers such as D. H. Lawrence, George Bernard Shaw and the Bronte sisters. But in addition, he had books on Ifa literature, orisa traditions, and eastern spirituality.I read all of them when I was in the primary school. It was much later I realised that I had a privileged reading culture as a child. All of the exposure stimulated in me a desire to write.
