The quake was terrifying, the amount of fear and panic, the feeling of helplessness you don’t know how to fight overwhelmed us at that moment. We contacted our loved ones in order to find out how they are. I was lucky so my family stayed together, and the house suffered minor damage, but not everyone was that lucky. We learn from the media how devastating the earthquake was. The earthquake destroyed the center of Petrinja, Glina and Sisak. Many were left without their homes in a second. It was just important to survive. Few houses have suffered any form of damage. The whole neighborhood became one, we cared for each other and feared new earthquakes.
As I participate in the eTwinning project Webučionica and together with Sandra Vuk and colleagues I organize and lead the activity Creativity in teaching - examples of practice, a large number of teachers know me and know that I live in the epicenter of the earthquake. I have received many messages, in which teachers ask how I am and whether I need help, and whether I know colleagues with whom teachers could help.
In order to facilitate the organization of assistance to teachers, I organized a Facebook group Teachers for Teachers of the Banovina. (Banovina is the common name for the area affected by the quake.) Teachers began to join in and the group began to grow rapidly with new members. The group currently has 7,704 teachers throughout Croatia. Teachers offered financial assistance that they wanted to provide to their fellow teachers whose houses were damaged in the earthquake or, worst of all, completely destroyed without the possibility of living in them.
