Background on the 20's
The 20's was a time of rejoice and a zest for life. Having just come out of world war 1 most of the world was recovering steadily from the financial strain of this but also the mental upset. The 20's took on many new ideals and consumerism became the back bone of the economy which was enjoying a short lived peak. Make up was big business and was sold for the first time in ready made portable, convenient devices. There was now make up counters, Advertisements, women's columns in magazines. Women became quite the force to be reckoned with in the 20's ignoring decorum and modesty and instead choose to be centre stage. For the first time make up was used to advocate  ones own agency and independence. Make was very new and poor in quality and colour range and there wasn't the luxury of tried and tested manuals on application and colour theory knowledge but that didn't stop women buying it. Movie stars, singers and dancers were big pioneers of make up and can be credited for women going about with dark eyes and pencil thin droopy eyebrows. Even though this type of dramatic make up was only used to play on shadows for black and white cinema it triggered many women to be more heavy handed in their quest to immolate their favourite starlet.
