Production
The story of the film is based on the true-life incidents and incidents of a woman called Sonia who was wrongfully framed for a murder and sentenced to life imprisonment, but later the law caught her, and she was awarded the death sentence and was hanged. The script was written by Virender Sodhi and the movie is based on his novel, Laaga Chunari Mein Daag.
Producers of the film were Balaji Motion Pictures and the film was produced by Madhur Bhandarkar, Subhash Bapat, Deepak Bhattacharya and Eeshwar Singh. The film's music was composed by Anu Malik and lyrics were penned by Sameer Anjaan and Shailesh, with the exception of one song, which was written by Sameer Anjaan. The background score was by JAM8 and the final mixing was done by S. S. Rajamouli. Jaya Bachchan was chosen to play the female lead, while Rani Mukherji was chosen to play the role of the female lead's elder sister, in the film.
Casting
After winning the competition for young actors held by Balaji Motion Pictures, actors Abhishek Bachchan and Shweta Menon were cast in the lead roles of Sonia and Priya, respectively. Amrita Puri and Arbaaz Ali were cast as the female lead's mother and father, respectively.
