On their journey, they encounter three heroes who have committed themselves to living in a world no longer conducive to their survival and offer their assistance. On the night before their battle with a brutal being, the maiden and two heroes visit a lonely chapel, and become the center of a ceremony wherein the three warriors are transformed into three divine servants.
Gameplay
The player is tasked with guiding one of the fallen heroes, the Maiden of Mercy, on a quest through a dying world to recover three fallen deities and, finally, the Maiden of Mercy's own lost homeland, which is corrupted by the goddess Mercia. Along the way, the party encounters three heroes who decide to commit themselves to the world of decay and assume mortal form. The heroes are Saciel, the Sage of the Dying Earth; Sir Lionel, the Guardian of the Last Fortress; and Ichabod, the Odious Hesseau, a.k.a. Ichabod the Deathless. At the end of the game, the players choose between two of the three mortal heroes, Saciel and Ichabod. The other two serve as the names for game modes: an eponymous "Mercy Mode" and an "Honor Mode".
Development
The developers of the game, Harebrained Schemes, were the creators of a previous role-playing video game, The BattleTech Roleplaying Game. After their game's release, the developers had the idea of creating a spiritual successor of sorts for the BattleTech RPG. They started working on the game in 2004 as a hobby project, and spent one year on it before starting to make it more substantial. A prototype version of the game was released in 2006. According to Jordan Weisman, the BattleTech CEO of Harebrained Schemes, the idea of a spiritual successor to the role-playing game originated from the idea that it is an unrealistic franchise. The developer team consisted of about thirty-five people.
The game was released on February 22, 2008.
Plot
The game begins with an epilogue. The prologue is a timeline of the events in this game, showing the heroic actions of the three protagonists that started in the previous game, the Dungeon Siege video game. The next part of the game begins with the characters entering a temple where a priestess resides.
