Unlike other services, Roblox is free to play for anyone who wants to use the platform. Users cannot purchase Robux or other virtual currency directly through Roblox. Roblox Corporation compensates for the lack of virtual currency by keeping a dominant share of the advertising revenues created by games released on Roblox. Roblox Corporation also received compensation for hosting games that are not hosted by other platforms, such as Microsoft's Xbox Live and Nintendo's NIntendo Wii U and Wii U. During 2016, nearly 50% of the games hosted on Roblox were owned by Roblox Corporation, and approximately 40% of these games were exclusive to Roblox.
