AutoCAD has long been considered one of the leading tools for architectural design, having the advantage of being the only major CAD program to include interior design features. However, the application is becoming increasingly popular for business and mechanical design as well, especially for engineers, architects, and car designers.
Although AutoCAD is usually used for design work, it can also be used for creating documents. The application can export its drawings as PDF files and can open and import them in other CAD applications.
When you use the AutoCAD Windows client, you can use AutoCAD from the desktop, from the AutoCAD application window, or in the Windows command line (CLI). We’ll learn how to use the Windows client in this tutorial.
The AutoCAD application is available for all major operating systems including macOS, Linux, and Windows, and it is free.
This tutorial is written using the Windows version of AutoCAD 2017. If you are using a different version of AutoCAD, please consult the version page to learn about the corresponding features.

AutoCAD Setup
First, you must set up the application. The setup procedure varies depending on which version of AutoCAD you are using. We will provide a detailed step-by-step tutorial for the latest version of AutoCAD, and we’ll just briefly touch on the setup process for other versions of AutoCAD.
After you launch the AutoCAD application, you’ll see the Setup screen (see Figure 1).

In the top-right corner of the Setup screen, there is a button that reads “Install AutoCAD on a different computer.”
Click on that button to start the setup process. If you are using a different version of AutoCAD, follow the instructions under that button. If you are using AutoCAD 2017, click on the button shown in Figure 2.
