In September 1983, Autodesk filed a trademark application for "AutoCAD", which it received the following December.[6] AutoCAD 2012, the latest version at the time, was released in October 2011.[7]
The development of AutoCAD began in 1974, when Anthony Mollison, a University of Toronto PhD student working with Autodesk and Hewlett-Packard, sketched a graphic on an HP-35 calculator to help his students understand how to model and edit CAD objects. He would then need to make a printed version of the graphic so that the students could study and reference it. He would then start to create a similar drawing on paper for each student. Mollison thought that it would be easier to do the same things on a computer, so he wrote an Apple II BASIC program to draw the CAD on the computer. This program, which was originally called "AutoCAD", was released in 1977.[8]
