History and features
AutoCAD was first released in December 1982 as a desktop app running on a DEC VT100 and Tandy Color Graphics System. At that time, the graphics hardware standard in use was the HP-GL. AutoCAD ran on the PC DOS operating system and could be purchased with a color monitor. A version for the Macintosh was introduced in March 1984.
Over the years AutoCAD has been extended to meet many new user needs and has become a very popular CAD program. In 2009, AutoCAD received several significant software enhancements. Among them was a 3D function, new table features, a new command for creating custom labels, and a feature called Context-Sensitive Editing.
AutoCAD and AutoCAD LT are the two AutoCAD versions developed by Autodesk. AutoCAD LT is designed for entry-level users and is intended to complement AutoCAD.
AutoCAD is cross-platform, and there are versions for Apple, Android, and Windows platforms. There are also versions for mobile devices and for web.
AutoCAD applications are installed as a program in the user's file system. AutoCAD LT programs are installed as a program in the directory that is a child of the AutoCAD directory (on Windows platforms) or the AutodeskApp directory (on Mac platforms). AutoCAD Enterprise programs are installed as a program in the AutoCAD application directory.

To view Autodesk AutoCAD files (.dwg,.dwf,.dwt) the viewer must be installed on the client system. This is normally done automatically when AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT is installed on a computer. Windows users can use the software that comes with the operating system or can install the free Autodesk Autodesk Viewer from the Autodesk Application Store. For MacOS, MacAutoCAD is a free viewer that is bundled with AutoCAD or AutoCAD LT. To view the files on an iPad, there are several apps that are available for download.
