Pwned Passwords are hundreds of millions of real world passwords previously exposed in data breaches.This exposure makes them unsuitable for ongoing use as theyre at much greater risk of beingused to take over other accounts. Theyre searchable online below as well as beingdownloadable for use in other online systems. Read more about how HIBP protects the privacy of searched passwords. Password reuse is normal. Its extremely risky, but its so common because its easy andpeople arent aware of the potential impact. Attacks such as credential stuffingtake advantage of reused credentials by automating login attempts against systems using knownemails and password pairs. NISTs guidance: check passwords against those obtained from previous data breachesThe Pwned Passwords service was created in August 2017 after NIST released guidance specifically recommending that user-provided passwords be checkedagainst existing data breaches. The rationale for this advice and suggestions for howapplications may leverage this data is described in detail in the blog post titledIntroducing 306 Million Freely Downloadable Pwned Passwords.In February 2018, version 2 of the service was releasedwith more than half a billion passwords, each now also with a count of how many times theydbeen seen exposed. A version 3 release in July 2018contributed a further 16M passwords, version 4 came in January 2019along with the Collection #1 data breach to bring the total to over 551M.Version 5 landed in July 2019with a total count of 555M records, version 6 arrived June 2020with almost 573M then version 7 arrived November 2020bringing the total passwords to over 613M. The final monolithic release was version 8 in December 2021which marked the beginning of the ingestion pipeline utilised by law enforcement agencies such as the FBI. Downloading the Pwned Passwords listThe entire set of passwords is downloadable for free below with each password beingrepresented as either a SHA-1 or an NTLM hash to protect the original value (some passwordscontain personally identifiable information) followed by a count of how many times thatpassword had been seen in the source data breaches. The list may be integrated into othersystems and used to verify whether a password has previously appeared in a data breach afterwhich a system may warn the user or even block the password outright. At present, the downloadable files are not updated with newentries from the ingestion pipeline, use the k-anonymity API if youd like access to these.Please download the data via the torrent link if possible! On using an online serviceIm often asked how I feel about syncing my passwords via 1Passwords online service, towhich I have 2 responses: Firstly, I need a sync service. I regularly use several differentdevices and when I sign up to a service on say, my PC, I also want access to the credentialson my iPhone. Plus, I want the ability to securely share secrets with family so there needsto be a sync service and theyve designed a really solid way of doing this.Secondly, I point people who want to understand more to the 1Password security modeland if they really want to get down into the details, to their whitepaper on the 1Password security design.It goes as deep as you want to go in terms of detail but the big things for me are the factthat they can never see any of my stored passwords, that even if someone got my masterpassword theyd still need a separate secret key to gain access to anythingsensitive and that they offer two-factor authentication which is required to set up 1Passwordon any new device.Theres a heap of other features beyond those that keep me using 1Password too. For example,travel mode to remove vaults from mydevices entirely while Im on the road, version historyso I can see previously used passwords and super easy browser integration so I can not onlylogin to websites easily, but also generate strong, random passwords for new accounts. Get 1Password and get secure!Ive lived with 1Password day-in and day-out for years now and Ive stuck with them for thereasons mentioned here. This is why Im recommending 1Password on HIBP - because its the oneboth my family and I use and its the best possible thing you can do to improve your onlinesecurity!
