A novel index for estimating oxygen consumption in the flounder, Paralichthys olivaceus.
The flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) is widely cultured in Japan. Although the flounder has excellent meat-yielding properties, its high cost of production restricts its use. Accordingly, the oxygen consumption rate is used as an index of the cost of production. In this study, to improve the accuracy of oxygen consumption rate, we investigated whether the oxygen consumption rate is affected by the total muscle mass, body length, and size of the muscle (M(1)-M(5) (from pectoral to dorsal fin) muscle and M(6)-M(7) (from dorsal to pelvic fin) muscle), and established the optimal M(1)-M(7) to M(1) ratio. We also compared the oxygen consumption rate with the condition factor of flounders to examine whether the two parameters are correlated. The correlation coefficient (r) between the M(1)-M(7) to M(1) ratio and M(1) was significantly higher (r=0.851) than the coefficient (r=0.454) between the condition factor and M(1). The difference in the coefficient between the two parameters was significantly larger than the difference between the coefficient and the oxygen consumption rate. In addition, the coefficient between the oxygen consumption rate and body length was significantly lower than that between the oxygen consumption rate and body weight. This result suggests that the oxygen consumption rate is not correlated with the condition factor and that the correlation is influenced by the body length. Our results indicate that the ratio of M(1)-M(7) to M(1) can be used to estimate the oxygen consumption rate.It is not unusual to find depressed people at the onset of a serious illness, and most of them will recover. However, in a cohort of major depression sufferers, it seems that some people may get further down the slope than they started. It seems that we can’t stop that process and some may become quite severely depressed and suffer from other symptoms of depression, such as anxiety and suicidality.
