However, when I was in middle school and high school, I was never ever involved in anything math-related in terms of contests, and I was never exposed to any of the information contained in Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition but just the basic ones. Although I eventually earned two degrees in mathematics, I wonder to myself if it is so really important to be a competitor (a.k.a. mathlete) at so young of an age, cramming all these information in a young brain and only use them for contest purposes. Its like trying to memorize all of the combo moves for a Mortal Kombat game with no value of applying them in real life. Thats what I am troubled and concerned about. As for myself, I actually know about 95% of everything that is presented in the book, but that was a result of a long journey of studying mathematics and learning a tidbit here and there from various of books. That, in the end, became ingrained in my mind because I took the time, studied it, absorbed the application of it, and placed it in my repertoire. However, reading Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition is so demotivating that I lost care about what I am reading. Its just too much information at once with no white space around each concept. Maybe if the author could spread it out over three books or so with more white space around, that might help. Probably one of the most important yet overlooked aspect about kids doing hard-core mathematics (too much, too soon) is the burnout factor. Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition is a great breeding ground for this. I know, its all exciting and new--but Id rather be interested in mathematics and pursue it leisurely for a lifetime rather than trying to do well in some fast-paced, anxiety driven contests for three years. Yes, and I know, knowing this stuff will lead to success on the SAT, ACT, AIME, IMO, and whatever else and then land the kid in a Ivy League School or its counterpart, but really--money, social status, and alma mater arent everything in life. Just take it really easy and enjoy the math for the sake of it. Finally, probably one pet peeve about Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition is that whenever the author proffers a math question, I would proceed to solve it and then discover if my solution is correct or not. Instead, the author just moves on to the next question or topic. That occurs often throughout the book, and I pretty much give up on it, only to resort to read it as if I am reading a non-fiction story. Actually, reading the words is as if I am listening to the author speaking. Some of you are concerned about which book to buy: get the Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition because it contains a special chapter that the other one does not have. One more thing to mention is that there are plenty of grammatical errors throughout the book, but its a very minor issue that I would dismiss it due to the strength of the material.All in all, despite my criticism, Hard Math for Hard Math for Middle School: IMLEM Plus Edition is a very good book and will prove to be useful for any mathlete; however, for the non-mathletes (I am referring to those who study math for pleasure), I would skip the book and look elsewhere for a more-evenly spaced out book that covers the same ground. ...more
