There are 2 main classes of automation in AutoCAD:
 User-written code (VBScript, macros, Visual Studio Add-Ins)
 The API (Application Programming Interface)
The API is a set of C++ classes which can be used from any C++ program to control the execution of AutoCAD. The developer can create new classes which make up the API (e.g., ACustomMenuItem, AAutoWindow, ABadgeToggleButton, ACueSet, etc.). The developer then integrates them into the application through the use of the DLL.
VBScript
VBScript is a Microsoft Visual Basic scripting language. It can be used to automate the execution of AutoCAD and other applications using a scripting engine. The scripting language is known as VBScript because the object-oriented programming language, Visual Basic, runs on Windows.
A number of AutoCAD features can be automated using VBScript. For example, the command set of AutoCAD can be modified using VBScript as follows:

VBScript macros
VBA macros are a type of macros written in Visual Basic for Applications. They are developed with Microsoft Visual Basic for Applications (VBA) or Visual Basic for Applications 6 (VBA6), which are the macro language of Office applications and Microsoft Office 97. They can be developed and run from Office 97, Excel 97, Word 97, or PowerPoint 97. Microsoft Office 2003 includes macros in Excel, Word, and PowerPoint as well. Macros can be run from other applications, including AutoCAD.
VBScript, on the other hand, is a language developed for the Microsoft Windows operating system, and requires Windows in order to be run. This is the reason for the lack of integration of macros and VBScript, as AutoCAD does not have the ability to run VBScript. Therefore, if a customer wants to integrate macros with the AutoCAD product, they must write their own VBScript.
